Journée internationale des droits des femmes 2023

Autoplay
Mamma is a song about my mom's struggle with depression and mental health. Her unwellness and pain made her unrecognizable as a person. She was a smart, loving, compassionate, sensitive, fun mom for a time, despite struggling with her own childhood traumas. Once her depression hit, I lost her, and that made me angry. I felt like despite all our family efforts to get her on track, we failed. Intellectually, I know that's not true. Emotionally, it was a burden I carried for a long time.

I wanted my album to be a step in the right direction of my healing journey. To be a testimony for people that you don't have to be a stereotype of your environment. 'Mamma' is the beginning of my story. I wanted to have it reproduced and put on this new album so it could thoroughly summarize my journey so far. Anger is a consuming and destructive emotion. I've been emotionally exhausted and don't want to carry that feeling anymore. I emptied a lot of myself into this record as a cathartic experience.

*Footage in this is a little sneak peek at my upcoming docu-series*

This house is not a home
To hell with it
The portrait on the wall
To hell with it

Yeah it’s true that
All homes have cracks
But tell me how is mine so broke

Yeah, mamma
Why did you have to go
Mamma
Why did you just let go
Mamma
You never saw us grow
Mamma, mamma
Mamma
Why did you have to go
Mamma
Why did you just let go
Mamma
You never saw us grow
Mamma, mamma
Oh, oh

The roof is on the ground
To hell with it
The walls have all caved in
To hell with it

Yeah it’s true that
All homes have cracks
But tell me how the beams of mine broke

Yeah, mamma
Why did you have to go
Mamma
Why did you just let go
Mamma
You never saw us grow
Mamma, mamma
Mamma
Why did you have to go
Mamma
Why did you just let go
Mamma
You never saw us grow
Mamma, mamma
Oh, oh

And I wait for you to come home (Wait for you to come home)
Hoping that you won’t take too long (That you won’t take too long)
But I know you’re too far gone
Yeah, mamma
Why did you have to go
Why did you just let go
You never saw us grow
Mamma, mamma
Mamma
Why did you have to go
Why did you just let go
You never saw us grow
Mamma
Yeah, mamma (Mamma)
Oh, oh (Mamma)
Oh
Mamma (Mamma)
Oh (Mamma, mamma)
You never saw us grow
Mamma, mamma
Oh, oh (Mamma, mamma)
Mamma (Oh)
